Navigating complex coaching assignments: Applying a case formulation approach to increase coach effectiveness

 Workshop Synopsis

Case formulation is considered a core skill in the applied psychology field but there has been limited research in the application of formulation to coaching psychology. This workshop is the result of doctorate research that developed and evaluated a model for applying formulation to executive coaching.

In many assignments coaches find themselves facing the complexity of many interacting factors at individual and broader environmental levels. Each individual and their context can be different and applying an approach based on formulation can assist coaches in their decision-making about what factors are important and the best approach to take in a coaching assignment.

The objectives of this workshop are:

  1. To develop an understanding of how to develop and use a formulation-based approach in coaching.
  2. To give participants experience in using the Purpose, Account, Intervene, Reflect (PAIR) model to applying case formulation to coaching assignments.

This workshop will provide a model that assists coaches in applying a case formulation approach in their coaching practice, whether this is executive or personal coaching. The participants will have an opportunity to practice developing a case formulation for one of their coachees and reflect on whether this might change how they approached the assignment.
